OXFORD:
- Rowan Oak — Home of novelist William Faulkner (There are numerous sites related to Faulkner in and around Oxford; see Faulkner Itinerary).
- Oxford Town Square —
Designated as a National Historic District, the Town Square appears in
a number of novels of a number of Southern writers, including Faulkner.
- Walton-Young Home — Home of writer Stark Young.
- University Museum — Houses five different collections, including collection of works by primitive painter Theora Hamblett.
- J. D. Williams Library Archives —
Houses 300 manuscript collections, including the Faulkner collection
and over 20,000 volumes of Mississippiana. Also displayed are
paintings, photographs and Faulkner’s Nobel.
- Blues Archives,
J. D. Williams Library — The world’s largest repository of blues
recordings and other blues materials, including B. B. King’s musical
papers.
- Square Books — One of the finest independent booksellers in the nation.
HOLLY SPRINGS:
- Ida B. Wells Museum —
Located in the historic Spires-Bolling home, the museum houses a
variety of family heirlooms as well as historic African American
artifacts.
- Cedarhurst — Childhood home of writer Sherwood Bonner.
- Walthall-Freeman-Clark Home — Family home where painter Kate Freeman Clark retreated after giving up her painting career in New York City.
- Kate Freeman Clark Gallery — Holds most of Clark’s paintings.
NEW ALBANY:
- Union County Heritage Museum — Outdoor Faulkner garden features plants found in Faulkner’s fiction, also a scale model of his birthplace.
- Faulkner Birthplace site
RIPLEY:
- Ripley Public Library — First editions of Colonel William C. Falkner’s manuscripts.
TUPELO:
- Elvis Presley Birthplace —
15-acre Birthplace Center includes shotgun house where Elvis was born,
an Elvis museum featuring personal memorabilia, “story wall,” chapel
and gift shop.
WEST POINT:
- Howlin Wolf Museum — Located in historic Friday House museum.
COLUMBUS:
- Tennessee Williams Home/Welcome Center — Former Episcopal rectory where Williams lived as a child when his grandfather was rector.
STARKVILLE:
- Grisham Room,
Mitchell Memorial Library, Mississippi State University — Literary
manuscripts, signed photographs, international editions and even
legislative files of this best-selling phenomenon.
- Charles H. Templeton, Sr., Music Museum,
Mitchell Memorial Library, Mississippi State University — Houses
collection of more than 200 self-playing musical instruments, 22,000
pieces of sheet music, 15,000 recordings and other items pertaining to
the music business since the mid 1800s.
KOSCIUSKO:
- Oprah Winfrey Road —
A number of Oprah-related sites, including the Buffalo Community
Church, the Buffalo Community Center, the Winfrey family cemetery and
Oprah’s birthplace.
