Amory Regional Museum

715 South 3rd St.
Amory, MS

www.amoryms.us

A visit to the Amory Regional Museum is a trip down memory lane. Beginning in 1916 as Gilmore Sanitarium, our building served as home to Amory’s first hospital, and is now a MS Historical Landmark. Serving as our museum since 1876, it is here where you'll be taken to the very roots of Amory ... learning about our railroad heritage and how it affected the growth and development of our town in so many, many ways. Also, it is here where you'll hear the stories about the individuals who have had such an impact on the commercial, cultural and religious aspects of Amory. The Amory Regional Museum now houses artifacts dating from 10,000 BC as well as exhibits by contemporary artists. In addition, our museum archives include many textiles, military memorabilia, photographs and other information representative of our history and the accomplishments of our citizens. Finally, a trip to our museum would not be complete without a visit to our Regulator log cabin, built in the period 1838 – 1840, the “Birth of Blue Suede Shoes” exhibit or the “Pasadena Hills” No. 1251 Passenger Coach.

Grove Loop and Student Union Drive
Oxford, MS
662-915-7211
www.olemiss.edu/tours/lmsections-barnard.html

After visiting the observatory at Harvard, Chancellor Barnard designed the plans for this observatory, which would house his collection of physics instruments and a new telescope deliberately built to be four inches larger than the one at Harvard. Due to the Civil War, the telescope was never delivered to Oxford. The east wing became the residence for the professor of physics and astronomy, and the west and middle sections were classroom and laboratories. Barnard Observatory is now home for the Center for the Study of Southern Culture.
