This unit consists of 2,200 acres, most of which are old fields or cultivated farmland. There are 25 ponds on a 400-acre portion of the unit, previously managed as a commercial catfish operation. Twenty nine species of shorebirds have been recorded on the refuge. The refuge also holds a large concentration of ducks and several species of geese in winter. Marsh birds such as sedge wrens, marsh wrens, common yellow-throats, soras, and king rails are regularly seen and heard at the Black Bayou Unit. Peregrine falcons, least terns, black terns, and wood storks pass through during migration. You may also spot bald eagles during winter.
